Series: Dear Pastor Chris

Passage: John 3:1-9
Scripture:
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name." - John 20:30-31
Devotional:
I remember a quote I read in Donald Miller's book, Blue Like Jazz, that said "Believing in God is as much like falling in love as it is making a decision. Love is both something that happens to you and something you decide upon."
I can't think of a better way to describe my belief. I believe in God because I've seen Him happen to me over the course of my life. As I look back, I see that even though circumstances, people, and my feelings often changed - sometimes abruptly and inexplicably, sometimes beautifully and sometimes tragically - I found that the God I knew as a child was the same God I found as an adult - ever present, constant, never changing. I found that no matter how bad things got or how fearful I became, there was always somewhere in the far reaches of my mind and soul, a flicker of peace, of hope, and of light.
In many cases none of those feelings made sense in light of the circumstances I was facing. I have no scientific evidence that my heartbeat slowed or my brain chemistry changed in those instances. I have zero concrete facts to back up my belief in the fact that He was present. I just know that the peace, hope, and light that I felt was as real as my very breath. And that could only be God. The scripture in John 20:31 is as true for me as is the fact that the Earth is round or that 1 plus 1 equals 2. By believing in Jesus Christ I have found that I have life - full, abundant, peaceful, hopeful life - in His name.
So now, I make a decision to believe in God every single morning. And it's as easy as deciding to drink a glass of water. It just makes good sense to me.
Prayer:
Holy Lord, we know that the grace-filled life You offer us if ours for the taking. It has been all along. Let us have the faith to choose You every morning and then to open our eyes to the evidence of Your light, Your peace, and Your hope. In Jesus's name. Amen.
