When taken at face value, the story of David and Goliath is about being at the right place, at the right time, and taking the right course of action. But I think there is much more to this story than meets the eye.

David was the youngest son in his family and was given the task of protecting his father's flocks. David used his time in the fields wisely and developed his skills with a sling shot. He also developed courage by tracking down and killing the animals (e.g., a lion, and a bear) who preyed on his sheep.

Additionally, David used his time in the fields developing his faith by learning about God. David had already been anointed by Samuel and in 1 Samuel 16:13, the Bible states, ". . . and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David." But what does that mean? I think it means that the Holy Spirit helped David to develop a personal relationship with God.

When David was sent to check on his brothers, who were in the Army and preparing to fight the Philistines, he heard Goliath taunting the army and defying God. A righteous anger grew in David's heart and he knew that he was supposed to go out and fight that giant.

First, David had to endure his brother's embarrassing ridicule; but, he persevered and eventually convinced King Saul to send him into battle. When offered King Saul's armor, David took it off when he determined it was not right for him.

David went into battle with his faith and his experience with a sling shot. At this point in the story, it kind of sounds like a fairy tale of good overcoming evil - except there is a deeper message here for all of us. If we look at Ephesians 6:10-17, we are all encouraged to put on the full armor of God.

I can imagine David mentally preparing for his battle with Goliath by "putting on" the breastplate of God's Righteousness. Pulling the Belt of Truth tight around his waist, knowing that God is the Way, the Truth, and the Light. Picking up his Shield of Faith and Sword of the Spirit, which David knew was the living and precious Word of God. Placing the helmet of Salvation on his head and the Shoes of Readiness on his feet.

So this, I believe, is how David went into battle. He ran toward Goliath with total confidence and courage, knowing that God was with him in his time of need. Being spiritually equipped, as well as an expert marksman, David easily killed the Giant with just one stone from his slingshot.

Imagine the giants we could slay in our own lives, if we were as prepared, equipped, and as willing to follow God's leading as David.
