Volunteer Opportunity to Accompany Immigrants to Immigration Appointments

Many immigrants must attend ICE, ISAP (Intensive Surveillance Appearance Program) and court appointments. As ICE increases their ranks and arrests become more commonplace, these appointments have gone from routine to terrifying.
Accompaniment, accompanying an immigrant to an immigration appointment, is an important way we support our immigrants.
Accompaniment training, will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2025 from 2 pm – 4 pm at the Warrenton United Methodist Church. Registration is required by the training organization, the DMV Accompaniment Network (DAN). We need 20 people to attend for the training to be held, so feel free to invite family members or friends to register and attend. Training is required to accompany. The link or URL is below. Maybe you’re not sure if accompaniment is for you. Come to the training and find out. Attending a training does not obligate you to accompany.
In practical terms, accompaniers bring essentials, like masks and water, sometimes a ride, but also intangibles such as compassion, courage and concern. We also bring an emergency information form for the immigrant to fill out so that if they are detained we can alert family and friends, return any belongings or children they have entrusted to us, and find them in detention. It’s great if you’re bilingual but it is fine if you’re not. Accompanying does not put you in danger.
Accompaniers are no longer allowed into ICE or ISAP offices so we wait outside. I come with a chair and a promise to the immigrant that I will wait until they walk back out.
Let’s support our neighbors, coworkers and friends by accompanying them at this difficult time in their lives. Accompaniment is an act of solidarity that says, “You are not alone.”
