Being Seen

Devotional:
Sometimes we wish God would show us exactly where our lives are headed. We want to know why something happened, what comes next, and how everything will turn out. But Ruth 2 reminds us that God often doesn't show us the whole picture. He simply gives us the next step.

Ruth is a widow, a foreigner, and is uncertain about her future. She goes into a field to gather leftover grain so she and Naomi can survive. It seems like an ordinary day. But that ordinary day changes everything.

Ruth "happens" to enter the field belonging to Boaz. We know it wasn't really an accident. God was quietly working through the ordinary circumstances of Ruth's life. And He often does the same in ours.

We may think we're simply going to work, helping a friend, serving at church, raising our children, having a conversation, or getting through another difficult day. Yet God can use those ordinary moments for purposes we cannot see.

We don't have to understand the whole plan to take the next faithful step.

God Sees the Overlooked

Ruth could easily have felt invisible. She was a widow, a foreigner, and someone gathering what others had left behind. But Boaz saw her, treated her with dignity, and showed her extraordinary kindness.

That should challenge us to notice the people around us who may feel invisible. Who is sitting alone? Who is struggling quietly? Who needs encouragement? Who simply needs someone to say, "I'm glad you're here. I see you." God calls us not only to receive His grace but to extend it to others.

The Story Isn't Finished

At the beginning of Ruth, Naomi feels as though her life has become empty. But by the end of chapter 2, hope is beginning to return. Her circumstances haven't completely changed. But she begins to realize that God may still be working.

That's an important lesson for us. Sometimes God changes our circumstances quickly. Other times, He changes our perspective first. When life is confusing or disappointing, we can be tempted to believe that God has forgotten us. Ruth 2 reminds us: God's silence is not God's absence.

He may be working long before we can see what He is doing. Ruth didn't know that her ordinary day in Boaz's field was part of a much bigger story—a story that would eventually lead to King David and, generations later, to Jesus. She couldn't see the whole story. Neither can we.

But God can.

This week, whatever season you're in, ask yourself: What is the next faithful step God is asking me to take? Maybe it's trusting Him. Maybe it's forgiving someone. Maybe it's reaching out to someone who feels alone. Maybe it's simply getting up tomorrow and faithfully doing what God has placed in front of you. You don't need to know everything God is doing. You just need to trust the One who does.

Prayer:
Gracious God, thank You for reminding us that You are working even when we cannot see it. Help us to trust You with the parts of our lives we don't understand. Give us courage to take the next faithful step, and give us eyes to see those around us who need kindness and encouragement. When we feel forgotten, remind us that You see us and that our story is not finished. In Jesus' name, Amen.
